Rivers Police Remove Two Officers Over Alleged Cultists’ Renovation of Abuloma Outpost

The Rivers State Police Command has removed two senior officers from their positions and ordered a full investigation into allegations that suspected cultists financed the renovation of the Abuloma Police Outpost and subsequently visited the facility to celebrate the completion of the project.

The affected officers are the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of Abuloma Division and the officer overseeing the police outpost. Both have been queried and relieved of their duties pending the outcome of the investigation.

The development followed the circulation of a social media report and video allegedly showing suspected cult members at the renovated facility on Thursday, October 15, 2026, during what appeared to be a ceremony marking the completion of the renovation.

According to a report by Premium Times, a social media user identified the group as “Aro Bagger” and claimed that the renovation was unveiled as part of activities marking the group’s 2026 Humanitarian Day celebration. However, the allegations surrounding the group’s involvement and the circumstances of the project remain subject to police investigation.

In a statement issued on Friday, the command said Commissioner of Police Olugbenga Adepoju had directed a comprehensive investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the renovation and verify the allegations.

The statement, issued through the Police Public Relations Office, condemned any action or association capable of undermining the integrity, discipline and professional standards of the Nigeria Police Force or creating an impression of legitimacy for suspected cult groups and other unlawful organisations.

The command emphasised that police facilities are public institutions established to protect lives and property and enforce the law. They must not become platforms through which suspected criminal groups seek public recognition, influence or acceptance.

Investigators have been directed to identify the individuals or groups that financed or facilitated the renovation, establish which police officers authorised or approved the project, and determine whether the appropriate procedures were followed.

The investigation will also examine whether any police personnel breached professional standards, compromised the integrity of the Force or played a role in facilitating the incident.

The command acknowledged that legitimate community contributions towards improving police facilities are permitted under Section 26(1)(d) of the Nigeria Police Act 2020, which provides for gifts and contributions to the Police General Fund.

However, it stressed that such support must not compromise police independence, security or professional standards. Investigators will therefore establish whether the necessary approvals were obtained and whether adequate checks were conducted on those who financed or facilitated the renovation.

The police further warned that financial contributions or assistance to law enforcement facilities do not confer immunity from investigation or prosecution, regardless of the identity or influence of the donors.

The incident has raised questions about the procedures governing private contributions to police facilities and the safeguards required to prevent such assistance from becoming a means of exerting influence over law enforcement institutions.

While community support can help address infrastructure gaps and improve policing facilities, the circumstances surrounding any donation must be transparent, properly authorised and consistent with the law.

The Rivers State Police Command reiterated its commitment to fighting cultism and organised crime, maintaining professional discipline and protecting public confidence in the police. It warned that any officer or individual found culpable would face appropriate disciplinary or legal action in accordance with the findings of the investigation and existing laws.

The command also urged members of the public to remain calm and provide credible information that could assist its investigation and broader security efforts across the state.
